mike burke Koffeehouse with Caitlin Linney, Mike Burke and the Porcelain PistolsBoston native, Mike Burke, has had a musical path unlike most. Learning several instruments as a child, he never performed or really thought about pursuing music as a career. Mike has always been involved in working with children and organizations that help children/people in need. In 2008, he started working with Musicians On Call, where he would play for children who were in isolation units in different hospitals around Manhattan. In 2010, he started working with Mid Atlantic Burn Camp where children who are burn survivors can experience a summer camp with other young burn survivors like themselves. in 2011, realizing that his music was actually helping others, he decided to leave Wall Street, move to LA to pursue music full time, and support the organizations as much as he could by donating half his music proceeds to them. In 2013, Mike will be traveling with CHAP International to Liberia, West Africa to help build orphanages and help those who have lost so much. In addition to working with these organizations, Mike has made great strides since moving to LA; releasing his 2nd EP, winning the 2012 Malibu Music Awards, singing the National Anthem at several MLB/NBA games, as well as playing several multi city tours on both the east and west coasts. She has toured across the eastern and southern United States from Boston, MA to St. Petersburg, Florida as well as in the southwest and the islands of Hawaii. Today, Nicole regularly performs at many of LA’s most popular bars and clubs and continues to record and engineer herself and other artists. jen armstrong Koffeehouse with Jen Armstrong, Adjoa Skinner and Alaina BlairBorn in a village home to more sheep than people, UK artist Jen Armstrong didn’t have the most competitive of starts. This gave her a shock when, moving to Leeds to study a degree in pop music she realised that actually, she wasn’t the only person who could write songs and sing them well. Luckily, she has developed a unique pop/rock style with catchy, tongue in cheek lyrics coupled with a beautifully powerful vocal which gives her the edge over the usual pop songwriters. Jen visited LA to write and perform throughout 2012, and wrote in Scandinavia August 2012 and January 2013 with various writing teams. She released her debut EP in June 2012, with a launch in Leeds, which was a storming success. Her new EP was released September 2012, launching in style with a tour with Caffé Nero. She supported Billy Ocean at Grassington Festival, and Jools Holland at Cornbury Festival over the summer. One of Jen’s most recent successes was winning ‘Rock the House’ at the House of Commons in London. 2013 looks to be a very exciting year for this determined British artist.

hope waits Koffeehouse with Mike Burke, Hope Waits and Alma Desnuda Hope Waits possesses that rare talent that is born of challenge, pain and heart. Growing up in the bayous of Louisiana, her story eerily parallels those of many of the great blues and soul singers whose essence she reflects. The 7th of 12 children born to an alcoholic father and an overprotective mother, Hope spent her childhood moving from place to place – often with no food for her and her siblings. Sheltered from secular music by her mother, Hope learned to sing in Southern Baptist choirs and wrote love songs underneath her bed quickly learning how to pull a tune out of her difficult upbringing. While Hope was beginning to find herself both personally and musically, tragedy struck when her mother was brutally murdered by an unknown attacker, a cold case that remains unsolved. With the loss of her mother, Hope had a moment of revelation that she would not let life pass her by and began to fully pursue her passion. Chance brought her into Chessvolt Studios where she met producer Peter Malick (Norah Jones, Otis Spann) and his business partner Douglas Grossman. The two immediately recognized the timeless qualities of her voice and brought Hope in to record her debut album Introducing Hope Waits. With Malick at the helm, Hope delivers an album so full of maturity and passion that it belies the fact that this is a debut. In addition to the 12 tracks on the physical album, the digital release includes two additional tracks produced by David Kalish (Rickie Lee Jones, Nicolette Larson) and Barrie Maguire (Amos Lee, Natalie Merchant). DownBeat has given the album a glowing 4-star review stating, “Hope Waits effortlessly transcends influences and comparisons with a fully formed and highly personalized vision and approach.” Allmusic called the album “atmospheric, intense and often hypnotic.” While Honest Tune proclaims “Hope Waits possesses a rare combination of ability, class and grace, qualities that could well make her the modern day equivalent of Billie Holiday.” M: Music & Musicians Magazine featured her in their “What’s Next” section of the July/August 2011 issue. Hope was also featured in ELLE Magazine (Brazil), alongside Melody Gardot and Diane Birch, as one of the top 5 new female singers who are a “must listen”. The accolades continue to come from all corners of the world.

alma desnuda Koffeehouse with Mike Burke, Hope Waits and Alma Desnuda Alma Desnuda (Spanish for “Naked Soul”) from the San Francisco Bay Area, is best known for their captivating harmonies, rhythmic grooves and inspiring lyrics. Often described as California Acoustic Soul (a mix between Jack Johnson, Sublime and the Beatles), they were recently voted by the public as “Best Live Act 2011” (Slim’s SF). Grammy-winning recording artist and producer David Pack attributes the band’s success to their “natural-born stage charisma, whom like Dave Matthews Band, are an authentically gifted live act that have managed to capture lightning in a bottle.” Following their award-winning debut album Middleway, the internationally-touring band’s sophomore release Riders has already won songwriting competitions like John Lennon Contest and has also generated spotlights from press and radio, including the title of “Top 5 to Watch in 2012” (Diablo Magazine). Speaking on their collaborations with various non-profits, KFOG DJ Renee Richardson applauds the band’s commitment to community outreach and says the band “appeals to the highest ideals of the zeitgeist of global culture.” Whether it’s uniting the world through singles like “Life We Got” or simply living each day with a naked soul, these four brothers are carving out a destiny that’s sure to take them to the top.

Brother Sal

brother sal Brother SalThere’s something about a piano man that brings people together from all walks of life. When Brother Sal pours his soul into the keys, he creates a joyful noise that unites the crowd through raw emotion and awakens the song inside all of us. It’s the universal nature of music that comes from the heart.

It’s impossible to try to make music that is embraced by such a wide audience. Some people just do it naturally. Brother Sal has rocked audiences at NASCAR races, Congressional ceremonies, and officially sanctioned Jeff Buckley tribute concerts. That’s the power of his trademark “Whorehouse Gospel” sound. It connects with the sin and the saint in all of us.

CNN heaped praise on Blood and Dust, saying the album “is the way music is supposed to be,” before their correspondent went on to say, “Brother Sal wrote every song on Blood and Dust for a reason, and every time he sings it, he sings it for a reason. You can feel the passion and meaning behind the music.” Anchor Reggie Aqui added, “You had me at ‘Whorehouse Gospel.’”

Brother Sal comes by his expansive appeal honestly. Born in Virginia, he was taught to play the piano with love by his grandmother. Unlike a lot of people in the area, Sal was lucky enough to see the world in tow with his father, a photojournalist for the military. Sal ended up spending the bulk of his youth in Italy, with intermittent stints in various towns across America, before taking root in California and building his music career. In these seemingly disparate locations, Sal learned the truths that span all people.

“I don’t care who you are, everyone on this planet has at least one thing in common, and that’s music. I don’t care if you are white, black, Asian, a Christian, a Muslim, a doctor, a soldier, young or old, music is the one thing that we all have in common. Music is the medicine for the soul.” Brother Sal in Crowned Rebellion.

Brother Sal taps into the common rhythms and stories that we all share, or as No Depression put it:

“Sal’s sound is so organic and ageless that it moves you on an almost animalistic level, but there’s also a lot of wisdom in these songs too. They’re the stories and celebrations of life’s victories and defeats and the long van ride in between. The stories are personal but the feelings behind them are universal and transcendent. You may have suffered different losses and you may have won under different circumstances, but you know the feelings behind these songs, and Sal sings with such unadulterated passion that the commonality of the emotion resonates with everyone in the room.” NoDepression.com

Sal has surrounded himself with some of the most talented musicians in Los Angeles, including David Immerglück (Counting Crows), Brian Wright, and Joe Purdy, just to name a few. Together, with his band The Devil May Care, Brother Sal plays over 150 shows a year, and he recently stepped into the hallowed ground of the world famous Sunset Sound studios to lay the next chapter of his story to tape in his upcoming album, The Other Side of Sin.

But of course, for a working man like Sal, one new album isn’t enough. He’s also completing another full album, The Rise & Fall of the Hummingbird. And just in case two full length original albums aren’t enough for you, Sal is also finishing up two cover albums, Live at Sunset Sound and Midnight Whiskey Blues. The best part is, he’s still got more songs in him.

Koffeehouse 2012 Canadians Abroad Holiday Party

ofVerona 300x300 Koffeehouse 2012 Canadians Abroad Holiday PartyThe name of Verona comes from Shakespeare’s earliest known play, Two Gentlemen of Verona, which has the smallest cast of any of the Shakespeare plays. The band imagined it as the underdog of sorts, surviving on the sheer virtue of its story. With an indie sensibility and a commercial appeal, of Verona combines the core elements of a classic four-piece rock band with the electro pop heartbeat of 2050. MTV recently featured of Verona as a ‘Band to Know’ stating, “If you like melodic rock & roll with great female vocals like Florence & The Machine, you’ll definitely dig of Verona” and leading industry publication, Hits Magazine, declared them as one of the top five bands to watch for this year. Of Verona’s self-produced debut full length, The White Apple, will be released on July 10th through Hype Music/Sony.

Koffeehouse with Emily Herndon, Katie Ekin and Noah Needleman

emily herndon 300x225 Koffeehouse with Emily Herndon, Katie Ekin and Noah NeedlemanEmily Herndon has only ever wanted to be a musician, though she might have become a pirate if given the opportunity. Despite giving up on her pirate dreams, Emily is pretty happy with the direction she’s headed in. She moved herself to San Diego, California, where May Stands Still was born. Blending her love of folk music and beautiful harmonies, May Stands Still embodied the styles that Emily has always felt most passionate about. Working with Asha Sukumar and Wesley Switzer, May Stands Still recorded the EP “Matter of Time” in 2010. The EP was a great success, gaining radio airplay and a legion of dedicated fans. May Stands Still decided to make the move to Los Angeles, where they recorded their full length album, “When You Come Home,” which will debut November 1. Emily began branching out in the music scene, challenging herself to take on different styles and genres. She started playing with several notable acts while in LA, such as Jessie Payo, Parker Ainsworth, Lucky Diaz, and Brooke Parrott. Emily established herself as an eclectic songbird, even earning her a showcase sharing the bill with Tristan Prettyman and Jason Mraz. As she branches out as a solo artist, Emily Herndon blends pop, folk, and indie rock for a seamless and utterly unique sound. She seeks to combine her quirky personality, heartfelt lyrics, and love of dinosaurs to translate to great music for the masses.

katieekin 195x300 Koffeehouse with Emily Herndon, Katie Ekin and Noah NeedlemanAt just 21 years old Katie Ekin has won 10 songwriting awards, including Best Song and Best Performance at the WCS Hollywood competitions. Born and raised in Santa Cruz, California Katie grew up listening and watching her father perform in a band. She’s always had a heart for music, but in her younger years she was too shy to show her talent. That soon changed when she picked up the guitar at fifteen and wrote her first song. It began a pattern, which has led her to have written nearly 200 songs. “I get asked a lot about how many songs I’ve written, and it always surprises me to see peoples reactions to my response. Songwriting is such a daily routine for me, I never think about it being foreign to other people. I could spend the whole day in my music room playing around with melodies and chords.” Her songwriting style is mature beyond her years, using her own experiences to pull from. “Songwriting isn’t just my passion, it’s my lifestyle. Growing up in Santa Cruz you hear a lot of surfers say that, but I really feel its true with myself and music. My days revolve around a melody and my guitar knows more than any one person. It’s my diary.” Katie’s sound is definitely her own. It fits into the pop-folk-indie category, but when you hear her songs, you know they are hers. It’s that magic sound. With her powerful songwriting, captivating performances, ambition and award winning songs, you are sure to see much more come from this young singer-songwriter.

NoahNeedleman 300x300 Koffeehouse with Emily Herndon, Katie Ekin and Noah NeedlemanBetween gigging, writing, recording, producing, directing, and teaching music, Noah Needleman keeps pretty busy. Mostly to distract himself from the painful anonymity of being a singer/songwriter in Los Angeles. He studied music in college, majoring in Music Theory & Composition, which makes him more of a nerd than a rock star, but shows how much he loves his craft. Noah came to LA from Napa, California, (where he still visits for the free food and wine from his family,) and insists that if he could live anywhere on the planet, it would be Los Angeles. “After I travel anywhere, coming home to LA is like coming back to the Chocolate Factory,” he says. Noah has been a featured musician on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, and has won awards for his song “Get By” in the documentary film First Generation. Noah’s EP 6s & 7s can be purchased on iTunes, and his band Uncle Daddy is set to release their debut LP, Good Mourning on June 26th, 2012. *You can also find Noah on YouTube, where his guitar lessons, original songs and cover performances have gained him over a million views.
